Air purifiers have long been in the market but their unprecedented boom in recent years has turned this household appliance from a fad to a staple in various spaces.
Primarily used to clean the air, improve indoor air quality and help with allergy symptoms, these innovative air cleaners can eliminate dust mites, pollen, volatile organic compounds, pet hair, wildfire smoke, cigar smoke, odors and other airborne contaminants through the use of filters such as Ultra-Low Particulate Air (ULPA), High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA), Ultraviolet (UV) light and activated carbon types. ULPA filters can remove particulate matter of 0.12 microns in diameter or larger, while HEPA filters are effective in eliminating particulate matter of 0.3 microns in diameter or larger. UV light filters are capable of killing molds and germs, while activated carbon filters can remove organic chemicals from water. Other filters that are used in home air purifiers include media, washable, electrostatic filters, spun glass and pleated, which are considered low-maintenance and cost-efficient.
Manufacturers continue to develop new and advanced offerings as demand for air purifiers rise. Today’s selections range in sizes, shapes and capabilities. Some suppliers offer units that have smart features and can be controlled via a mobile app, while others integrate a humidifier, night light or mosquito killer. There are air purifiers with variable fan speed and low noise levels, and are specifically designed for cars, homes, offices, hotels, restaurants, and medical and industrial facilities of various square footage.
The global market for air purifiers is currently enjoying continued growth and a surge of interest among consumers. According to Grand View Research, the market was valued at $12.26 billion in 2021 and is anticipated to reach $25.97 billion by 2030, reaching a CAGR of 8.1 percent. The growth is mainly driven by the growing concern of people on the rising air pollution levels and the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak, the increasing prevalence of airborne diseases, and the rising awareness of the benefits of air purifiers.
