Increasing adoption of electric vehicles will boost demand for charging stations for residential and commercial installations, including for hotels. Market volume of these recharging points is projected to reach about 2.798 million units by 2027, posting a CAGR of 17.5 percent from 2017, according to Research and Markets. In 2020, the total was approximately 905,000 units valued at $26.09 billion.

In China, government support for construction of EV charging stations exists in the form of both funding and mandates. “China State Grid and China Southern Grid, China’s two state-owned electric utilities, both have programs to promote the development of electric vehicle charging infrastructure,” according to Columbia University’s Guide to Chinese Climate Policy.

With a growing market and a conducive industry environment, Chinese manufacturers of EV charging stations are pushing on with their product development initiatives. They are focusing on smaller designs and fast chargers that are adapted to EV drivers’ needs when traveling. Some are introducing smart features for efficient charging, based on the available power capacity of the electric car being charged.

AC, DC and AC/DC charging types are widely available in China. By rated voltage, there are 200 to 500V, 350 to 700V and 500 to 950V versions, providing charging current of 80, 100, 125, 160, 200 or 250A. Standard charging stations have 32A output current and 12kW rated power, while fast charging types deliver up to 80A and 120kW. All have overload, overheating and short-circuit protection. Water resistance ratings range from IP54 to IP65. Products typically carry CB, CE, RoHS, TÜV and UL approval.

Key components used in the manufacture of EV charging stations include control modules, smart meters, charging plugs, LEDs and circuit breakers. These and housing materials are sourced from domestic or foreign suppliers, depending on customers’ preferences.
